What began as a simple hobby in a family kitchen has blossomed into a thriving business, proving that determination, creativity, and support can transform dreams into reality.
Eighteen-year-old Devishti Sukhan, an account clerk by day from Islington Village in Region 6, discovered her love for baking at age 14 while helping her mother in the kitchen during holidays.
“My mom loves baking, and I would be in the kitchen with her during Christmas holidays. That’s where it all started,” Devishti recalled.
Over the years, she honed her skills by creating birthday cakes and treats for family and friends, turning a cherished tradition into a personal passion.
Starting out was not easy. With no proper equipment, she mixed everything by hand.
Her journey took a pivotal turn with a $100,000 government grant, which she invested in supplies and equipment, enhancing both the quality and efficiency of her work. Family and friends also rallied behind her, helping with packaging and encouragement.
“I had to pool all my money together, but when I collected that grant, the first thing I did was buy a mixer. My hands felt a relief instantly because I was baking over 1,000 butter cookies,” she said.
Devishti’s first official order came from a coworker in September 2024 — a simple batch of cupcakes that marked the beginning of her business, Suga Plum.
Since then, she has expanded her reach through social media, attracting customers from across the region.
“Social media is everything for marketing. Don’t be camera shy; just go with it, if you have a passion for something, you can start off small,” she advised aspiring entrepreneurs.
Looking ahead, Devishti envisions owning her own café or bakery within the next five years — a goal she is determined to achieve. “I’m a very determined person. I learned from my family that two sources of income are better than one, so I turned my hobby into a business to reach my goals faster,” she said.
Her journey shows that by starting small, using what you have, and leveraging every opportunity — whether through social media, community support, or a government grant — passion can indeed be turned into profit.
