The Government of Guyana has taken a major step in making homeownership more accessible as 21 residents of Region One became the first beneficiaries of the Steel and Cement Housing Subsidy Programme.

The voucher presentation ceremony took place at the Regional Democratic Council Boardroom and was officiated by Minister of Housing, Collin Croal. The initiative is designed to ease the financial burden of purchasing building materials for citizens aspiring to construct their own homes.

For recipients, the vouchers represent more than financial aid. Shonella February, a mother of two, said the support will help her build her house and expressed gratitude for the initiative. Dorothy Aduilar of Koberimo, who has already begun construction, emphasized the personal satisfaction of establishing her own home.

Minister Croal highlighted the programme’s direct impact, noting that the vouchers provide tangible relief to citizens while supporting the Government’s broader housing strategy aimed at assisting families nationwide.

Each voucher is valued at GYD $300,000, with the first batch distributed in Region One totaling approximately GYD $6 million. Beneficiaries are required to redeem the vouchers at Small’s Enterprise within six months.

Since the programme’s launch under President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, nearly 2,915 vouchers, valued at over GYD $655.8 million, have been distributed across Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. The initiative continues to be a cornerstone of the Government’s mission to provide affordable housing for families throughout Guyana.
