A 19-year-old Venezuelan national of Sophia, East Coast Demerara, was arrested on Sunday evening after police discovered a suspected firearm and ammunition during an operation at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Police in Regional Division #4 ‘C’ said the incident occurred around 18:30 hrs during an exercise along the Railway Embankment, Lusignan. Ranks observed the suspect standing on the roadway with what appeared to be a bulky object in his pants waist.
As officers approached, the suspect was seen removing a black object, believed to be a handgun, from his waist and throwing it to the ground. The item was retrieved and found to be a suspected black 9mm pistol containing a magazine with eight live matching rounds of ammunition.
When questioned, the suspect reportedly stated that he was not the holder of a firearm licence. He was arrested and escorted to the Vigilance Police Station, along with the suspected firearm and ammunition, which were lodged.
He remains in custody assisting with investigations.
