A 29-year-old woman died and two others were injured in a late-night accident on the Sarah Johanna Access Road, East Bank Demerara, on Sunday.
Dead is Lisa Blackman of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Diamond Regional Hospital after the car in which she was travelling slammed into a parked lorry at about 22:40hrs, police said.
Investigators said motor car #PNN 7493, driven by a 42-year-old man of Turkeyen, was proceeding north along the western side of the road at a reportedly fast rate of speed when the driver allegedly lost control and collided with the left rear portion of motor lorry #GAJ 4979, which was parked on the western side of the road.
Blackman and the driver were removed from the wrecked vehicle by public-spirited citizens and taken to the New Diamond Regional Hospital under police escort. The driver was later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further treatment.
A third occupant, a 36-year-old miner of Quamina Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was pinned inside the vehicle and later rescued by firefighters. He remains hospitalised at the New Diamond Regional Hospital.
Blackman’s body is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said CCTV footage from the area will be reviewed as investigations continue. No breathalyser test was conducted because of the driver’s injuries.
