A 21-year-old Venezuelan national died after being struck by a vehicle on the Bath Settlement Public Road in Region Five, Mahaica-Berbice, on Saturday night.

Manuel Rangel Marcano, of San Rafael, Capure de la Horqueta, Venezuela, was hit at around 10 p.m. while crossing the road with a co-worker after finishing a shift at a nearby market, the co-worker told Ignite News in an interview conducted in Spanish.

"We were together and were about to cross the road when the vehicle came very fast and hit my friend," the eyewitness said, describing the collision as horrific.

Police took the injured man to Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he died roughly three hours later, the co-worker said.

The eyewitness alleged the vehicle that struck Marcano belonged to the police and was moved from the scene after the crash, a claim that has raised concern among the victim's relatives and friends.

"We want justice and for everything to be clarified," he said, adding that Marcano and others had travelled from Venezuela for work due to difficult economic conditions at home. "We are honest, humble people... We work and send money home to support our families."

The co-worker said Marcano leaves behind a pregnant wife in Venezuela, and that roughly 30 relatives of the family are currently in Guyana.
