Thousands of jobs will be created through a wave of infrastructure and industrial projects set to transform Region Six over the next five to ten years, Senior Minister with Responsibility for Finance Dr. Ashni Singh said on Wednesday.
Singh was delivering the feature address at the opening of a new Government of Guyana Service Centre at Port Mourant, Berbice, attended by a large turnout from across the region.
More than 1,000 jobs would come from two new hospitals alone, Singh said, while thousands more would be created at a planned industrial complex housing an electricity plant, a gas-processing facility, a bauxite-processing plant and data centres.
"In two hospitals alone, you will have more than a thousand jobs being created for doctors, for nurses, for electricians, for plumbers, for mechanics, for ambulance drivers, for porters, for pharmacists, for pharmacy assistants, for nursing assistants," Singh said.
Additional employment would be generated at Palmyra, where an international stadium, hotels, a mall and shops are under construction.
Singh urged residents to take up training opportunities, including for bulldozer and heavy equipment operators, warning against frustration over jobs going to others who acquire the necessary skills.
The minister referenced an earlier address by President Irfaan Ali outlining the region's planned transport network, which includes a new four-lane bridge across the Berbice River, a highway along the Corentyne Coast to Moleson Creek, roads linking East Bank Berbice to Mara and to Orealla and Siparuta, a deep-water port, and a bridge across the Corentyne River.
Region Six will also receive the second gas pipeline, Singh said, feeding electricity generation and an industrial complex including petrochemicals, bauxite processing and fertiliser manufacturing.
Other projects under way include a new hospital in New Amsterdam, following one already opened at Number 75 Village, alongside a new Tourism and Hospitality Institute and the Guyana Technical Training College, which is preparing workers for the oil and gas sector.
The new service centre will offer Immigration, passport and Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) services to Region Six residents.
