With the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield tournament fast approaching in July, Slingerz FC Head Coach Shabazz is placing his faith not only in tactical preparation but also in the character and determination of his squad as they gear up for regional competition.

The Guyanese club has intensified its training programme in recent weeks, with players being put through rigorous sessions aimed at sharpening fitness levels, improving tactical awareness, and building chemistry ahead of the prestigious tournament.

While acknowledging that his squad lacks extensive experience at the regional level, Shabazz believes that desire, commitment, and mental toughness can bridge the gap when the team takes the field against some of the Caribbean's top clubs.

"We know that we have an inexperienced squad when compared to some of the teams we'll face, but football is not played on paper. What we may lack in experience, we have to make up for with desire, discipline, and a willingness to fight for every ball," Shabazz said.

The coach emphasised that representing Guyana on the regional stage comes with a responsibility to embody the spirit of the nation's people, noting that resilience must be one of the team's greatest strengths.

"We have to be resilient, just like the Guyanese people. Throughout our history, we've shown that we can overcome challenges and continue pushing forward. That's the mentality I want this team to carry into every match," he explained.

According to Shabazz, the training environment has been encouraging, with players responding positively to the demands being placed upon them as they prepare for the competition.

"The attitude from the players has been excellent. They understand the importance of this opportunity and they're working hard every day to improve. We are focusing on the small details because at this level those details can make the difference between winning and losing."

The CFU Club Shield provides clubs from across the Caribbean with an opportunity to showcase their talent while competing for regional honours and potential advancement.

For Slingerz FC, the tournament represents a further important step in the club's development and a chance to demonstrate the progress of Guyanese football on the regional stage.

As preparations continue, Shabazz remains confident that his players will rise to the occasion.
"We respect every opponent, but we won't fear anyone.

Our goal is to compete with pride, represent Guyana well, and show the fighting spirit that defines our people. If we do that, we'll give ourselves every chance to succeed."
