The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has strongly objected to the display of a map depicting the New River Triangle as part of Suriname at the opening ceremony of the Suriname Energy, Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS) 2026.

The PSC said the incident undermines confidence and goodwill among the Guyanese business community, despite the longstanding economic, cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

"The New River Triangle is part of the sovereign territory of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. Any depiction suggesting otherwise is unacceptable," the commission said.

The PSC noted this was not the first such incident. On February 11, 2025, it publicly objected to similar circumstances at a business conference in Suriname, where Guyana's territorial boundaries were not appropriately represented, and called for greater sensitivity regarding matters of sovereignty.

"It is deeply disappointing that, more than a year later, the PSC finds itself once again forced to object to a similar occurrence," it said.

The commission also raised concerns about fees imposed on vessels operating on the Corentyne River, saying the repeated incidents had created the perception of a troubling pattern inconsistent with the principles of neighbourly cooperation.

The PSC said it remained committed to dialogue, trade, joint investment and deeper economic partnerships with Suriname, but stressed such objectives could only be advanced in an environment of mutual respect and good faith.
