A large-scale recovery operation is under way across Region Two after a powerful windstorm struck the Essequibo Coast on Wednesday, with authorities working around the clock to distribute building materials and restore damaged homes, schools and public infrastructure.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali travelled to the region to conduct on-the-ground assessments and activated an inter-agency response team to coordinate relief and rebuilding efforts.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Madanlall Ramraj is leading restoration efforts alongside regional officials, engineers and emergency response agencies. He chaired a planning meeting early Thursday to mobilise resources and determine urgent interventions.
"Our immediate focus is to provide relief to affected residents, restore damaged roofs, and ensure that every family receives the support needed to recover from this unfortunate event. We are working around the clock to bring relief and restore normalcy," he said.
The response team includes the Civil Defence Commission, the Guyana Defence Force, the Regional Administration and the Men on Mission programme.
Authorities have recorded more than 120 storm-related incidents, including damaged rooftops, fallen trees, downed utility poles and destruction to public and private infrastructure. More than 120 tarpaulins have been distributed, with zinc sheets and other building materials also being delivered to affected households.
Special attention is being given to elderly residents, persons living with disabilities and single-parent households.
A teacher injured when part of the roof collapsed at Riverstown Primary School is recovering at Lima Regional Hospital. Repairs to the school have been prioritised.
Assessments have also been completed at the Anna Regina Stadium, where a section of the Blue Stand sustained significant damage, and at the Anna Regina Police Station.
President Ali reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting residents throughout the recovery.
"We will continue to stand with the people of Region Two," he said.
