Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus visited the family of Aftaz King on Friday, assuring them that any officer found responsible for the 16-year-old's death would face the full weight of the law.

Bacchus, Regional Commander for Division Six, was accompanied by senior officers and members of the Force's Cops and Faith initiative when he met with King's mother, Padminie Megnauth, and grandmother, Marcelline, conveying sympathies on behalf of Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken and the entire Force.

He urged the family to remain calm and patient while investigators work to establish the facts.
"It doesn't make sense that we pulling one side, you pulling one side, and then whatever is happening in between, it is not good or healthy for our community, for our region, or Guyana as a whole," he said.

He said no one would be shielded from accountability if found responsible.

"If the police is wrong, they will feel the brunt of law like any other who would have done wrong against a member of the community," he said.

Bacchus also encouraged the family and anyone with information to cooperate with investigators, and reminded them of established channels through which concerns could be raised if they remained dissatisfied with the outcome, including intervention by the Commissioner of Police.

He urged the family not to be swayed by rumours or outside pressure during their period of mourning.
The Office of Professional Responsibility, under Superintendent E. Baird, is actively investigating the incident, Bacchus said.
