A 27-year-old labourer was fatally stabbed during an argument that escalated into a confrontation at Haswell, Port Mourant, Corentyne, in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving one man in police custody.

Dead is Naresh Seecharran, also known as "Cat Man," of Lot 47 Glasgow, East Bank Berbice.
According to police, the incident occurred at about midnight on Tuesday at Lot 39 Haswell, where Seecharran and several others were reportedly imbibing alcohol and playing music in front of an apartment.

Investigators said Seecharran was liming with Shawn Abraham, 21, Kenny Abraham, 23, and Dharam Bownauth, called "Fat Boy," when an argument erupted between him and 20-year-old Parmeshwar Lionel, also known as "Small Man," a construction worker of Lacabhor, East Canje, Berbice.

Police said the two men began exchanging jokes over who frequently visited the Spanish Bar before the banter escalated into insults and eventually a physical scuffle.

During the confrontation, investigators allege that Seecharran ran into the apartment's kitchen and armed himself with a small Rambo knife taken from a wares rack. Police said Lionel pursued him, allegedly wrestled the knife away and stabbed Seecharran once to the left side of his neck.

Lionel reportedly fled the scene on foot towards his workplace at No. 19 Village, Corentyne.
The incident was reported to police at approximately 12:18 a.m., and ranks responded to the scene shortly afterwards.
When police arrived, they found Seecharran lying on his back outside the apartment.

He was dressed in black long pants, green boxer shorts and a blood-stained vest, and was barefooted. He had sustained a stab wound to the left side of his neck.

The injured man was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr Omapersaud.

Acting on information received during the investigation, police later arrested Lionel at No. 19 Village. He was informed of the allegation and taken to the Whim Police Station, where he remains in custody.

Seecharran's body has since been transferred to the Ramoo Funeral Home, where it is being kept pending a post-mortem examination.

Police said investigators have identified several CCTV cameras in the area, although the footage has not yet been reviewed.
