Guyana is now officially home to more than one million people for the first time in its history, according to new estimates released by the Bureau of Statistics.
In a message to mark World Population Day 2026, Chief Statistician Errol La Cruz said updated population estimates show Guyana's population reached 1,025,334 at the end of 2025, up from an estimated 956,044 at the end of 2024. The figure represents continued growth from the more than 800,000 people recorded during the 2022 Population and Housing Census, itself a 17.63 per cent increase over the 2012 census.
The Bureau also highlighted the country's youthful population, reporting that 42 per cent of Guyanese are under the age of 25, while 61 per cent are younger than 35.
The growing and youthful population presents significant opportunities to expand the workforce, drive innovation and sustain economic growth, while increasing demand for housing, healthcare, education, transportation, utilities and employment.
The Bureau added that reliable demographic data remain essential for planning public services and ensuring national development keeps pace with the country's rapid population growth.
