A man suffered a fractured right shoulder and facial lacerations after a fire service member's jeep allegedly ran a red light, triggering a five-vehicle chain collision at a Georgetown intersection on Monday.
The 28-year-old driver of motor car #PGG 9135, of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, sustained the injuries when his stationary vehicle was struck in the chain collision at the intersection of Conversation Tree Road and Railway Embankment, Blygezight, at around 08:50hrs.
Police said preliminary investigations found that the motor jeep, #PAD 3891, driven by a 58-year-old member of the Guyana Fire Service of Hand-en-Veldt, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was proceeding south along Conversation Tree Public Road when it allegedly overtook two stationary vehicles at the intersection despite the traffic light reportedly signalling red in its direction.
The jeep then collided with motor car #PAG 3236, which was proceeding west along Railway Embankment Road with the light reportedly signalling green in its direction, police said.
The jeep reportedly lost control after the collision, while motor car #PAG 3236 continued forward and struck three stationary vehicles, #PGG 9135, #PAN 4053 and #PAB 2512, on Blygezight Public Road.
The injured driver was taken by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was examined and admitted with the injuries. He was subsequently treated and discharged.
Breathalyser tests conducted on all drivers returned readings below the prescribed limit, police said.
