What was intended to be a memorable family trip to the North West District has instead left the Matabheek family counting their blessings while anxiously awaiting news of their missing relatives following the sinking of the MV Barima on Saturday night.

Adam Matabheek, 32, his wife Carlita, and Adam's younger brother, Safraz "Nathaniel" Matabheek, 28, were among those rescued after spending several hours adrift at sea. However, Safraz's wife, Rachel Welch, and their three children — Nathaniel Jr, 8, Natalia, 5, and Ezekiel, 3 — remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue.

The family had embarked on the journey to Smith Creek, Region One, to visit Rachel's relatives. It was Safraz's first trip to his wife's home community since their marriage, and the family had looked forward to spending time together.

According to the brothers, they noticed the vessel tilting shortly after 8:30pm. Believing the rough waters were responsible, they attempted to rest alongside dozens of other passengers who had settled into hammocks, benches and makeshift sleeping areas.

Their plans for a peaceful night quickly turned into chaos when the vessel suddenly overturned, plunging passengers into the dark waters.

Separated in the confusion, Adam, Carlita and Safraz battled the water to stay afloat. Carlita, who cannot swim, managed to cling to a life jacket after escaping from inside the vessel, while Adam eventually found both his wife and brother in the water.

Safraz was discovered holding onto a yellow container as the trio drifted through the night. Family members said he had been carrying money and other valuable belongings for the trip, all of which were lost in the tragedy.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts of his wife and children, relatives said Safraz continued praying alongside his brother, drawing strength from their faith as they battled exhaustion and the rough sea conditions.

The survivors remained in the water until daybreak, relying on life jackets and hope as they awaited rescue.

Now recovering from the ordeal, Adam and Safraz say they are grateful to have survived, even as they struggle to come to terms with the devastating loss facing their family.

For Safraz, the pain is especially profound. The trip was supposed to strengthen family ties and create cherished memories, but instead it has become a nightmare that continues to unfold.

As rescue teams press on with the search for Rachel and the three children, the Matabheek family remains hopeful for answers while giving thanks for the lives that were spared.
