Opposition Leader Azzrudin Mohamed was among three persons found aboard a 'go-fast' vessel intercepted at a Friendship wharf, East Bank Demerara, late Tuesday, police said in a release.
According to the release, the vessel was spotted entering the mouth of the Demerara River at about 9:45pm travelling at high speed, prompting the patrol to signal it to stop by siren.
When it failed to comply, officers pursued the vessel to the Friendship wharf, where it was intercepted.
Five other persons suspected to have travelled aboard were observed at the wharf on the patrol's arrival, according to police.
The GPF and GDF Coast Guard are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and further information is expected in due course, the release said.
Several opposition members have since criticised the incident, describing it as political harassment.
