Videsh Singh, a 28-year-old Albion fisherman, has been remanded to prison after being charged with manslaughter over the fatal stabbing of a fellow fisherman during a confrontation at his home.

Singh, of Lot 71 Albion Front, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before the Reliance Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, charged in connection with the death of 34-year-old Franklyn "Frank" Sauers, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, and Belvedere, Corentyne. Magistrate Tuanna Hardy presided virtually, and Singh was represented by Attorney-at-Law Vinay Punwa.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Meika Crawford told the court that Singh and Sauers had been involved in an altercation at a bar on September 6 before Singh returned home and secured himself inside. Sauers later went to Singh's residence, allegedly broke down the door and confronted him with what appeared to be a weapon. Crawford said Singh, fearing for his safety, used a knife to defend himself during the confrontation.

Punwa applied for bail, noting that his client had no previous charges and had asked his wife to call police, remaining at the scene until officers arrived. Crawford objected, saying the investigation was ongoing, the post-mortem report had not been received, and several persons still needed to be interviewed. She raised concerns that Singh could interfere with witnesses if released, and questioned whether his occupation as a fisherman would affect his return to court.

Hardy sought additional details on the circumstances and said she wanted to be present in person before ruling on bail. Singh was remanded until September 16, when he is expected to return to court.

Sauers' wife, 30-year-old Varund Sehadeo of Belvedere, Corentyne, earlier told Ignite News that her husband left home around 4pm on Sunday to purchase supplies for a fishing trip with a colleague, as was their routine. She later received a call from the colleague's wife asking about the men's whereabouts, and Sauers confirmed by video call that he was taking his colleague home.

Minutes later, Sehadeo received a second call, with screams in the background, in which the colleague's wife said the two men had fought and that someone was dead. Sehadeo went to the house with her son and found Sauers' vehicle still running outside. Inside, she found him lying in a pool of blood, still breathing, and called out to him as their son also called for his father.

Police said Sauers had suffered stab wounds to his ribs and neck. He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Singh was arrested at the scene.

Sehadeo said the two men had worked together in the fishing industry for four to five months and had become close friends, adding that her husband had never raised concerns about Singh or mentioned any serious disagreement between them. The couple had been married for 14 years and had one son. Sehadeo said the family is seeking answers about what led to the confrontation.
