Guyana's rapid economic expansion has drawn renewed interest from Japan, with officials from both countries meeting on Wednesday to chart deeper trade and commercial ties.
Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance Dr Ashni Singh met with Japan's State Minister of Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii and a Japanese delegation at the Finance Ministry, as both sides underscored the long-standing bilateral partnership and explored avenues for furthering cooperation across several sectors. Horii was accompanied by Japan's non-resident Ambassador to Guyana, Akima Umezawa, and other officials, while Dr Singh was joined by a team from the Finance Ministry.
Dr Singh noted the timely opportunity for collaboration given Guyana's rapid economic transformation across all sectors.
"We will be very interested in exploring how we can achieve deeper and more economic and commercial and trade ties, and having more Japanese companies present in Guyana, and we're happy to speak with you about how that can be achieved," Dr Singh said, adding that the visit signalled a clear, high-level Japanese commitment to deepening the relationship.
He further noted Japan's standing as one of the world's most industrialised nations with sophisticated companies and advanced technology.
"So, you're in a position where there is much that we can learn from Japan and Japanese companies, and there's much that we can benefit from the experience that Japan has and Japanese companies have," Dr Singh added.
Horii echoed the sentiment, expressing his government's interest in furthering the relationship.
"I recognise the great importance of strengthening relations with your country, which has been experiencing remarkable economic growth," he said, noting the meeting's timing ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Guyana, to be marked next year.
The high-level visit is expected to serve as a catalyst for strengthened bilateral cooperation and new areas of mutual economic growth. Japan has continued supporting Guyana across several sectors tied to improving citizens' quality of life, including a concessional agreement signed in January to upgrade water treatment infrastructure in Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
