Davion Mars is now the sole perfect player in the Pegasus Weekly Chess League after defeating Keron Sandiford in Monday night's highly anticipated Round Four clash.
Both players entered the encounter on 3/3, but Mars emerged victorious following a tense game that remained balanced for much of the evening.
Playing White in an Exchange Variation of the French Defence, Mars and Sandiford eventually reached a quiet endgame where a seemingly routine rook exchange on move 39 proved decisive.
Post-game analysis showed the resulting pawn ending heavily favoured Mars, who converted the advantage four moves later to secure his fourth consecutive victory.
Mars now leads the League with four points from four games, while Sandiford and Ryan Oniel McKay sit one point behind on three.
McKay defeated WCM Jessica Callender in another major Round Four result, while Odinnie Nehezie Reece defeated Sachin Beharry and Oluwadare Oyeyipo got past Martin Poon. Jaden Taylor also defeated Owen Mickle.
With three rounds remaining, the League will now pause for the Chess Olympiad before returning on October 5.
Organiser FM Anthony Drayton and two League participants will represent Guyana at the Olympiad in Uzbekistan from September 14–29.
The Pegasus Weekly Chess League is organised by Drayton's Chess Club in partnership with Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation.
Mars will therefore enter the break as the man everyone is chasing — four rounds, four wins, and the League's only perfect record.
