The Government said the US Department of Justice is being kept informed after Opposition Leader Azzrudin Mohamed was arrested following gunfire near the home of a key witness in his extradition case.

According to a Government statement, Mohamed and two other men were arrested after gunshots were fired from a car near the Barr Street, Kitty, home of Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Narine around midnight on Monday. The incident has implications for the US criminal justice system, it added.

Mohamed and the two men were "filming" Narine's home, by Mohamed's own admission, the Government noted. The men were in a dark-coloured car with heavily tinted windows, and spent shells were found on the road close to the house.

Narine fired his service handgun at the car and law enforcement officers chased and intercepted it, according to the Government. Mohamed was in the back seat and the other two men were in the front. An unlicensed firearm was found in the car. The three men remain in police custody.

Narine is testifying in the ongoing extradition case involving Mohamed at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court. The Government described the case as preliminary to a criminal trial likely to be held in the US.

It contended that photographs of Narine and his family, including his minor son, with President Dr Irfaan Ali were posted on Mohamed's Facebook page in an attempt to insinuate impropriety. Narine told the court under oath that he feared for his life and his family's safety, it said.

He also testified that Mohamed is a threat to national security and, according to Guyana Police Force information, is implicated in several killings, the Government pointed out.

"No amount of obfuscation, concoction or Facebook trolling will be allowed to contradict the factually verifiable narrative," the statement read.
The Government warned that the incident could also affect the safety of witnesses in the Guyana proceedings.

"Witnesses are key to any justice system. They must always feel safe when they testify. It is the State's duty to protect them. The State will do so," the statement continued.

Investigations are ongoing, the law must be allowed to take its course and "the full force of the law will be applied", it emphasised.
