The grandmother of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran says she wants nothing more to do with her son, the main suspect, after the boy's body was found in a West Coast Berbice canal.
Orlando's decomposed body was recovered from the canal along the Bath Sea Dam at about 1am on Tuesday. His father reportedly led investigators to the area where he allegedly dumped it. The father remains in police custody.
Dhankumarie Gowkarran told Ignite News she never expected her son to be accused of such an act and was struggling to process what police had told her.
"If we were to see him, I would say, 'I didn't expect you to be able to do this thing, and I disown you. And you're not going to get anything from me. You've got to go. You've got to go today, and I turn my back on you. I don't want to hear anything from you anymore,'" she said.
"I was shocked when I heard it," she said.
Gowkarran said she had no prior knowledge of anything suggesting her son would harm his children. She said he allegedly told investigators Orlando was not his child, a claim he had never made to her.
"He said it's not his children, and he never tell me something like that," she said.
She said the boys had never complained to her of being beaten or mistreated.
"I ask them if they are alright. They say yes, but they never tell me. If the father beat them, they said no, they never tell me nothing like that," she said.
Gowkarran said police told her that her son took Orlando on his motorcycle and threw the body into the canal.
"He carry it and he fling it in the canal..they didn't tell me," she said.
Police have not said how the boy died.
Gowkarran said she refused to give her son food after he asked for it from police custody on Tuesday morning.
"He sent this morning for food. I told the officer. I didn't give him anything," she said.
Another grandson who lives with her told her his father had treated the children well and never beat them, she said.
"He say his father treat them too nice, and he never tell him nothing or beat them or anything," she said.
Orlando lived with his father and two brothers, aged seven and 10, at Bath, West Coast Berbice. Their 11-year-old brother lived with his grandmother.
